Interior design is more than aesthetics—it reflects values, history, and the way we engage with the world around us. During Black History Month, it’s important to recognize how Black women designers continue to shape the industry by creating spaces that honor culture, prioritize longevity, and embrace sustainability with intention.

For many designers, sustainability isn’t a trend. It’s rooted in resourcefulness, storytelling, and respect for people and place. The following three Black women exemplify how cultural perspective and sustainable thinking intersect beautifully in interior design.

Tiffany Brooks
Tiffany Brooks is known for creating interiors that are expressive, functional, and deeply personal. Her work emphasizes wellness, intentional planning, and investing in pieces that support everyday living over time. By prioritizing durability and emotional connection to space, her approach naturally aligns with sustainable design principles. Her interiors reflect the idea that thoughtful design—rather than excess—is what truly lasts.

Justina Blakeney’s design philosophy celebrates nature, individuality, and cultural expression. Through a strong biophilic approach, her work brings the outdoors in using plants, natural textures, and handcrafted elements. This connection to nature not only supports well-being but also encourages more sustainable living practices. Her designs show that sustainability can be vibrant, layered, and deeply rooted in identity.

The work of these designers reminds us that sustainable interior design is not only about eco-friendly products, but about intention, storytelling, and respect for resources. Cultural awareness naturally encourages mindful design—spaces that are designed to last, feel meaningful, and support the people who live within them.

As the industry continues to evolve, the leadership and influence of Black women designers remain essential in shaping a more thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable future.
